Giant Dahlias in EQ4

These lovely virtual Giant Dahlia quilts are a result of an all-for-fun (and learning!) challenge on the Info-EQ mail list. I jokingly challenged Barb Vlack to a race to see who could finish the quilt first in EQ. The quilt design we were trying to replicate can be seen on Kitty's Quilts website.  Barb had a very busy week (at least that what she said :-) ... and before I had my blocks in my border, both Liz and Alexandra were announcing, "I did it!"

February 17, 2000 -  I added Barb Vlack's Giant Dahlia**

Please note: These are virtual quilts only and if you try to print out the templates you'll be printing out 110+ pages -- I checked it in preview. If you want to make a Giant Dahlia quilt, Marti Michell has a set of acrylic templates for rotary cutting that you can purchase to make the Giant Dahlia block.  Check your quilt catalogs at home or on the internet. I don't think I will ever make this quilt, but I always like a challenge.

Probably the hardest part of doing this in EQ is figuring how to make the pillow panel and the border blocks.  I got to take a look at Liz's and Alexandra's project files and we all approached it  the creation differently.

For the border blocks, Alexandra and I drew ours as rectangular blocks and then set them in the border using the Rectangular Block set. Liz was a little more innovative used the  Triangular set. It took me a while to figure out what she did....I haven't used the Triangular Set this way before. Neat idea!

Now that pillow panel...this we all did differently. Liz drew hers as blocks and since she was using Country Set she added filler blocks around the design. I saved the border block as a bitmap and then traced the pieces in PatchDraw so that I could have it "float" without seamlines.  Alexandra drew her pillow panel as one large block.  I am amazed that EQ let her save the block! Ingenuity strikes again. You should see the preview of the template for the solid area!

Despite the different ways we approached drawing this quilt in EQ, we all enjoyed the challenge and learned some new things from the process. Anybody else want to try?

**Barb Vlack sent me her Giant Dahlia file later than the others -- she didn't want to be left out...tee hee.  Barb had already drawn her dahlia block as a full block so she "floated" it on the quilt to get the extra space around the dahlia.  She drew her blocks for the border and the pillow panel as foundation blocks.  She noted that she wasn't going for proportion, but the general look.  I think a "general look" was the way all of us approached drawing this quilt!

Methinks this was much too easy for Barb....I'll have to think of something else now. :-)
